It seems we need the internet 24/7 now – on our phone, TV, PDA – soon the new wireless internet will stretch 30 miles from transmission points all over the UK meanining that eventually you will have broadband wireless anywhere.

Sounds good? Well, what are all those microwaves doing to us. Depression seems on the rise, maybe mobile phones and wireless networks are contributing?

My cheap PC upgrade

I wanted a new PC for video editing – priced in a dual-processor motherboard, 2xdual core, 4 gig of ram, 3TB of hard drive space, Open GL Quadra card and two monitors. It tipped the scales at £2K….

So I tried something else – Quadra FX 1100 graphics card recommended for Avid. £40 from e-bay, luckily my old 2.5ghz single core motherboard supported AGPx8 and it worked a dream. Previews are now full screen. Effects are clear and unjuttery in preview also.

Happy with this, I decided maybe look into a 3.4Ghz Prescott multi-threading CPU. The multi-threading will spend things up and we estimate 40% power improvement over my 2.53Ghz Northwood. Voila, £70 on ebay. I may also change my ram as my motherboard supports dual-ram function, although my current 1gig is in fact compatible with the 800FSB of the new processor.

Here’s hoping the upgrade all works out! Even my PSU is rated for the new CPU. Looks like my system was built with upgradability in mind.

Online poker – nerdy or kewl?

The great nerdy debate – is online poker nerdy or kewl?

Nerdy – long hours on the PC, cyber chat, looking in poker forums.

Kewl – make money (or lose), image of a gambling is always kewl.

I guess it’s a nerd meets kewl arena. What with all the online players like Annette15 being given serious respect for winning tournaments etc.

By and large, online poker players are more drinkers, drug takers, gamblers (of course) and bad asses. The girls seem more male or ‘ladish’ also.

I’ll let you draw your own conclusions, but I feel online poker is…..kewl.

Nerd? No cool!

I think the word ‘nerd’ is now being under stated.

So many ‘non-nerds’ do nerdy things – PS2, online gaming, Internet, technology slaves (e.g.new mobile phone etc.). Traditional non nerds have been converted with video games like Fifa – a fusion of ‘ned’ or ‘chav’ with ‘nerd’.

Soon ‘nerd’ will be replaced by ‘techy’ – or so I hope!

Windows Vista – more like Windows Re-hashed

There doesn’t seem to be much difference with Windows Vista – except it’s full of security holes.

Add to that the barage of questions the OS asks you as you use it and you’ll soon become pissed off and just want to get on with your work.

So far the reaction has been ‘a tarted up version of XP’. That’s about right.

Nerdy is kewl

I don’t see the big deal with being a nerd these days – Bill Gates is one of the richest men in the world and he’s a total nerd. All the .COM millionaires proved nerdy was a kewl asset.

You don’t need to be a jock footballer to make all the money anymore….
